Amino trimethylene phosphonic acid (ATMP) has excellent chelation, low threshold inhibition, and lattice distortion ability. In a water system, it can prevent scale formation, particularly calcium carbonate. Amino trimethylene phosphonic acid has good chemical stability and is hard to hydrolyze in a water system. At high concentrations, it has good corrosion inhibition.

ATMP is used in the industrial circulating cool water system of thermal power plants and oil refinery plants. Amino trimethylene phosphonic acid can decrease scale formation and inhibit metal equipment and pipeline corrosion. ATMP can be used as a chelating agent in woven and dyeing industries and as a metal surface treatment agent.

ATMP is usually used together with organophosphorus acid, polycarboxylic acid, and salt to build all organic alkaline water treatment agents. ATMP can be used in many different circulating cool water systems. A dosage of 1~20mg/l is recommended. As a corrosion inhibitor, the dosage of 20~60mg/l is preferred.
