EDTMPA is white crystal powder at room temperature, with a melting point of 215-217°C. It is hard to be dissolved in water. The solubility is less than 5% at room temperature. EDTMPA is easily dissolved in ammonia.
Ethylenediamine tetramethylene phosphonic acid has a strong metal ion chelating capacity, whose chelating constant with Cuprum ion is larger than that of EDTA.
EDTMPA has a high capacity for chelating metal ions. The complex constant with Cu is the largest in all chelating agents, including EDTA.
Ethylenediamine tetramethylene phosphonic acid is a kind of high-pure grade reagent and innocuous. Therefore, it can be used as a detergent in semiconductor chips to prepare integrated circuits, as a carrying agent for radioelement in the medical industry, and as an agent for inspection and therapy.
The chelating capacity of EDTMPA largely exceeds that of EDTA and DTPA. And it can replace EDTA for the chelating agents in almost any situation.
