Ethyl 4-hydroxybenzoate is also called ethylparaben. This paraben is colorless crystals or white crystalline powder. It tastes slightly bitter and astringent. Ethyl 4-hydroxybenzoate is freely soluble in alcohol, ether, and acetone. It is very slightly soluble in water.

Uses:

Ethyl 4-hydroxybenzoate is mainly used as an antiseptic in foodstuffs, medicine, and cosmetics. Ethylparaben is also used in feed as an antiseptic.

Ethylparaben may cause allergies. But acute and chronic toxicity is very low. LD50 is 8g/kg (mice, oral). It is generally recognized as safe.
