Glyoxylic acid is both an aldehyde and a carboxylic acid. It is supplied as an aqueous solution. Glyoxylic acid is a transparent light yellow liquid. It is mainly produced by either electrolyzing oxalic acid or oxidizing glyoxal.

Glyoxylic acid is the raw material for vanillin production in the flavor industry. It is also the intermediate for pharmaceuticals including atenolol, D-Hydroxybenzeneglycin, broad-spectrum antibiotic amoxicillin (orally taken), acetophenone, etc.

As a specialty chemical and biodegradable copolymer feedstock, glyoxylic acid is also a cleaning agent for a variety of industrial applications. Besides, glyoxylic acid is also used in dyes, plastics, and agricultural chemicals.
