Sodium Pyrithione

Categories: ,

Properties:

Sodium pyrithione is also called 2-Mercaptopyridine N-oxide sodium salt. This biocide is transparent yellow liquid or off-white powder. Pyrithione sodium is easily soluble in water and organic solvent, such as ethanol.

Pyrithione sodium salt can restrain and sterilize eight kinds of mold, five kinds of bacteria, and two kinds of yeast fungus: distillery yeast and bakers’ yeast.

The effect decreases when used in acidic conditions but is stable in alkaline or neutral conditions.

Bactericidal mechanism:

Pyrithione acts on bacterial cells. The bactericidal mechanism of zinc pyrithione varies slightly under different acidic and alkaline conditions.

Under neutral or acidic conditions, pyrithione takes K+ out of the bacterial cell and H+ into the bacterial cell. Under alkaline conditions, pyrithione takes K+ or Mg2+ out of the bacterial cell and Na+ into the bacterial cell.

Uses:

Sodium pyrithione (SPT) is currently the most effective water-soluble industrial anti-mold preservative. It has the characteristics of high efficiency, broad spectrum, low toxicity, and stability.

Pyrithione sodium is mainly used in personal care products (shampoo and hair care products), architectural coatings, adhesives, sealants, pesticides, textiles, leather products, metalworking fluids, and other fields of anti-mildew.

Pyrithione sodium can also formulate preservatives, detergent chemicals, and broad-spectrum dermatological antifungal drugs. In addition, sodium pyrithione is an effective fungicide for fruit trees, peanuts, wheat, and vegetables and a preservative for silkworms.

Sodium pyrithione can be formulated as a disinfectant, detergent, and broad-spectrum antifungal dermatological drug for medical use. Its derivative, zinc pyrithione, is a common fungicide used in daily chemicals.

Packing and Storage:

They are packed in drums of 25 kg or 250 kg net each. The validity period is 24 months. Keep in a dry and cool place. Avoid direct sunlight.

Toxicity:

Sodium pyrithione is a low-toxicity compound. But it still requires avoidance of contact with the mouth, eyes, and skin. Therefore, while using it, protective measures should be prepared.

Pyrithione sodium salt has an acute oral LD50 of 1260 mg/kg in mice and an intraperitoneal LD50 of 385 mg/kg in rats. The Ames test in mice was negative. The mean cumulative lethal dose of SPT administered intravenously to sober dogs was (770±73) mg/kg.
