What is Polyhexamethylene biguanide?
Polyhexamethylene biguanide solution system is a new chemical disinfectant developed and researched abroad in recent years.
Polyhexamethylene biguanide hydrochloride is a disinfectant that is widely used at present. Studies have shown that it has excellent disinfection properties, low irritation, low toxicity, low use concentration, and fast disinfection speed. Therefore, it is of great interest to disinfectant researchers.
Bactericidal Performance.
The disinfectant solution containing 1800 mg/L PHMB was effective against Escherichia coli in suspension for 5 min, with an average kill rate of 99.95%. The disinfectant solution containing 2400 mg/L PHMB was effective against Staphylococcus aureus for 5 min, with an average kill rate of 99.91%. The disinfectant solution containing 3200 mg/L PHMB was effective against Candida albicans for 10 min, with an average kill rate of 99.95%.
Compounding Performance.
Polyhexamethylene biguanide can be compounded with bis-decyl dimethyl ammonium chloride, benzalkonium bromide, ethanol, and chlorhexidine acetate, respectively.
In the study of the fungicidal performance of each system, it was found that the killing effect of the four compound systems on Staphylococcus aureus and Candida albicans was significantly higher than that of the single polyhexamethylene biguanide.
The two compound disinfectants, polyhexamethylene biguanide add bis-decyl dimethyl ammonium chloride and poly(hexamethylenebiguanide) hydrochloride (PHMB) add ethanol, were found to be the most effective in killing S. aureus.
Polyhexamethylenebiguanide hydrochloride (PHMB) plus bis-decyl dimethyl ammonium chloride and chlorhexidine acetate were more effective in killing Candida albicans.
The combination with other disinfectants can effectively reduce the concentration of polyhexamethylenebiguanide hydrochloride (PHMB), improve the fungicidal performance and reduce the cost of the product.
Toxicity.
Polyhexamethylene biguanide with polyoxyalkylguanidine hydrochloride disinfectant has an oral LD50 of more than 5000 mg/kg for male and female mice, which is a practically non-toxic grade.
The mean value of the skin irritation response score for rabbits was 0, which was practically non-irritating.
It has no micronucleogenic effect on mouse bone marrow multi-stained erythrocytes. The result of the accumulation toxicity test was weak accumulation toxicity. No genotoxicity to mouse germ cells.
Use.
1. Used in aquaculture
Polyhexamethylene biguanide is a polymer that can rapidly kill Gram-negative bacteria, Vibrio floating, Vibrio parahaemolyticus, Vibrio algolyticus, and other harmful bacteria in seawater. It has a good preventive and therapeutic effect on various diseases caused by bacteria in sea cucumbers and other aquatic products.
2. Anti-bacterial finishing agent for fabrics
It can effectively inhibit the growth of bacteria, and its antibacterial property is still effective after many times of washing. The antibacterial agent is relatively mild and does not cause damage to textiles, and is adapted to most cotton fiber products. After polyhexamethylene biguanide finishing wool fabrics have good antibacterial and washing resistance to Staphylococcus aureus.
3. Contact lens care solution
At present, the contact lens care solution on the market is mostly composed of polyhexamethylene biguanide hydrochloride (PHMB) and polyaminopropyl biguanide salt (PAPB) as the main active ingredients. According to GB19192-2003 contact lens care solution hygiene requirements polyhexamethylene biguanide (PHMB) can be applied to the cleaning, disinfection, preservation, and lubrication products of contact lenses.
4. For disinfection wipes
Polyhexamethylene biguanide (PHMB) can be used not only for the preparation of disinfectant wipes but also as an ideal raw material for antibacterial wipes, antibacterial wipes, and personal care wipes. It is an excellent substitute for some skin irritating antibacterial and antimicrobial products. It is a cationic polymer, and its antibacterial effect is mainly through dissolving lipids, changing the permeability of bacterial cell membranes, and causing metabolism in the bacteria to be impaired and antibacterial. PHMB disinfectant is colorless, odorless, non-irritating to skin, non-toxic, and non-corrosive. Therefore, the wet wipes treated by it can achieve a rapid disinfection effect without mildew and have a shelf life of up to two years.
