Poly(diallyldimethylammonium chloride) (PDMDAAC) is a commonly used water purifying agent. It exhibits many significant advantages in application, but to ensure purification efficiency and usage safety, there are many precautions that must be followed during actual operation.

PDMDAAC Application and Precaution

I. Application Advantages of PDMDAAC

Compared with traditional water treatment agents, PDMDAAC has prominent advantages, mainly reflected in the following aspects:

1. High Flocculation Efficiency and Low Agent Dosage

PDMDAAC has a high cationic charge density and strong binding ability with negatively charged pollutant particles in water.

To achieve the same treatment effect, its dosage is usually only 1/5 to 1/3 of that of polyaluminum chloride (PAC).

This not only reduces the cost of water treatment agents but also minimizes the potential impact of agent addition on water bodies.

2. Wide Application Range

PDMDAAC has a wide application range, as mentioned earlier:

  • It remains stable within a wide pH range of 2-11 and will not fail due to significant changes in water pH.
  • It has a certain removal effect on different types of pollutants such as suspended particles, organic matter, and heavy metals.
  • It can meet the purification needs of various water bodies, including drinking water, industrial wastewater, and landscape water. There is no need to frequently replace agents for different water bodies, which greatly improves treatment efficiency.

3. Facilitates Sludge Treatment

After using PDMDAAC, the formed flocs have high density and low moisture content.

This greatly reduces the difficulty of subsequent sludge treatment processes such as sludge dewatering and landfilling. At the same time, it also cuts down the cost of sludge treatment and the land area occupied by sludge.

4. Strong Environmental Friendliness

Environmental friendliness is an important advantage of PDMDAAC:

  • It has good biodegradability and can be decomposed gradually in the natural environment without leaving harmful residues.
  • It has low toxicity and has relatively little impact on human health and aquatic ecosystems, meeting the requirements of modern environmental protection concepts for water treatment agents.

II. Usage Precautions of PDMDAAC

In the practical application of PDMDAAC, the following precautions must be emphasized:

1. Strictly Control the Dosage

The control of dosage is crucial:

  • If the dosage is too low, flocculation and adsorption will be insufficient, making it impossible to completely remove pollutants, which directly affects the purification effect.
  • If the dosage is too high, it will not only increase the cost of agents but also may lead to excessive residual PDMDAAC in water bodies, causing secondary pollution (e.g., generating foam and increasing the COD of water bodies).

Therefore, before use, small-scale tests must be conducted to determine the optimal dosage. Moreover, the dosage should be flexibly adjusted according to the degree of water pollution, types of pollutants, and water quality indicators such as turbidity and pH value.

2. Reasonably Use Agents in Synergy

Although PDMDAAC can achieve a certain purification effect when used alone, it often produces a better synergistic effect when compounded with other water treatment agents.

For example, compounding with PAC can improve the turbidity removal rate; compounding with chlorine dioxide can enhance the sterilization effect.

However, when compounding, strict attention must be paid to the addition sequence and proportion to avoid adverse reactions between agents, which may affect the purification effect or generate harmful substances.

3. Pay Attention to the Impact of Water Temperature

Water temperature has a significant impact on the flocculation effect of PDMDAAC.

In low-temperature environments (such as winter), the molecular movement rate of PDMDAAC will slow down, and the rate of floc formation and sedimentation will also decrease.

In such cases, the dosage can be appropriately increased, or PDMDAAC can be used in combination with other high-efficiency flocculants suitable for low temperatures to ensure that the purification effect is not significantly affected by temperature.

4. Comply with Safe Usage Specifications

Although PDMDAAC has low toxicity, safety must still be ensured during storage and use:

Direct contact with the skin and eyes should be avoided. In case of accidental contact, rinse immediately with a large amount of clean water.

The storage environment should be cool, dry, and well-ventilated. PDMDAAC must not be stored together with strong oxidants, strong acids, strong alkalis, or other substances to prevent chemical reactions and ensure safe usage.

Only by fully understanding the advantages of PDMDAAC and strictly following the usage precautions can it give full play to its role in water purification and provide more reliable support for water environment governance.
