Methyl 4-hydroxybenzoate is also called methylparaben. This paraben is a white crystalline powder or colorless crystals. It is freely soluble in alcohol, ether, acetone, and very slightly soluble in water. Methyl 4-hydroxybenzoate boiling point is 270-280 deg. C.

Methyl 4-hydroxybenzoate is mainly used as antiseptics in foodstuff, medicine, and cosmetics. Methyl 4-hydroxybenzoate can also be used in feed as antiseptics. Because of its phenolic hydroxyl structure, methyl 4-hydroxybenzoate has stronger antibacterial properties than benzoic acid and sorbic acid.
